You only pay for active vCPU, not for the vCPUs your machine reserves. On average only 10% of reserved vCPU is active, and that is all you pay for. Memory and disk bill on use too, by the second.

You pay for what your machine uses, not for its size. Idle vCPU costs nothing: on average only 10% of a machine’s reserved vCPU is active. A hibernated machine only pays for its disk.

Calculator

What will it cost?

Describe a typical month: how many machines, how big, and how much of each day they run. We work out the active vCPU, memory and disk that adds up to and price it at the rates above.

Start from a use case

A workday running, hibernated overnight. Assumes 10% of the vCPU is active while it runs.

Machine size

1

All the same size and schedule, billed to one balance.

8 h

Active vCPU, memory and disk are billed.

0 h

Paused with memory kept warm, so memory and disk are billed. The other 16 h it hibernates and only disk is billed.

10%

That is 0.2 of 2 vCPU active on average. Only active vCPU is billed, so this number matters most. Across boxd machines the average is 10%.

2 GiB

Billed on what the machine holds, not the 8 GiB it has.

20 GiB

Billed on what you have written, not the 100 GiB it has.

Lifecycle

What each state costs.

One 2 vCPU · 8 GiB machine in each state, with 0.2 vCPU active, 2 GiB of memory and 20 GiB of disk. Moving between states costs nothing, and a machine with no network traffic hibernates on its own.

FAQ

About pricing

Credit-based. You buy credits and your organization's machines draw them down at the rate card: €0.039 per vCPU-hour, €0.012 per GiB-hour of RAM, and €0.00008 per GiB-hour of disk. You only pay for active vCPU, not for the vCPUs a machine reserves, and on average only 10% of reserved vCPU is active. RAM bills on memory in use and disk on what you have written to, not on the provisioned size. A default machine (2 vCPU / 8 GiB) is about €0.17 per hour with every vCPU active and full memory while it runs, and about €0.03 with 0.2 vCPU active and holding 2 GiB with 20 GiB written to disk. There is no monthly plan and no per-seat fee.

Actual, for all three. You only pay for active vCPU, sampled every second, not for the vCPUs a machine reserves: a 2 vCPU machine that is active 10% of an hour pays for 0.2 vCPU-hours. That is the typical case: on average, only 10% of a machine's reserved vCPU is active. It bills nothing hibernated or stopped, and next to nothing in standby, where its vCPUs are paused. RAM bills on the memory a machine has resident, sampled every second, while it is running or in standby, not on the 8 GiB it was provisioned with. Disk bills on the disk you have written to, in every state, not on the 100 GiB provisioned: a machine that has written 20 GiB pays for 20 GiB.

Usage is metered every second and settled every 15 minutes: each settlement adds up your organization's vCPU, RAM and disk for that window and charges each of the three rounded up to the next millionth of your currency, so rounding adds less than three millionths per settlement. There is no minimum charge per machine, and a partly used window bills only the seconds used. Each settlement lands on your balance as one charge, shortly after its window closes.

€30 of credits when you add a payment method. Nothing is charged when you add the card; it is how we keep fraudsters off real machines. Once those credits run out, auto top-up adds €20 at a time from that card so your machines keep running. You can change the amount or switch it off under Billing.

Only for disk, and only for the space you have written to, not the 100 GiB provisioned. A machine hibernates on its own when its network traffic stops: its memory is written to disk, and the next request wakes it. If you need it back faster, standby keeps memory warm and resumes in under a millisecond, and a machine in standby pays for memory and disk. CPU is billed only while a machine runs.

Every account is an organization. Invite your team, share machines, and draw from one credit balance. Usage across all members bills to the organization. Each organization starts with a quota of 100 machines; email contact@boxd.sh to raise it or to get larger shapes than the default 2 vCPU / 8 GiB.

Self-host it. boxd is one Rust binary that runs on your own AWS or GCP account or on any KVM host, with no Kubernetes or external database to set up. It is free up to 16 vCPUs, and a licence lifts that limit.
