boxd
The future is on serverless containers
Founded in 2026, boxd builds development environments for fast-growing engineering teams: lightning-fast, persistent-by-default, hardware-isolated, and forkable machines. Soon, 99.9% of code will be written and maintained by agents, and they'll need billions of machines exactly like these. That's what we're building.
About the role
You'll own the layers that make a boxd machine feel instant: the microVM engine, our custom Linux kernels, snapshot and fork, the networking fabric, and the Raft-based control plane that places and coordinates every VM in the fleet.
You'll work directly with the founders on the hardest parts of the system, the ones measured in microseconds and blast radius. You make decisions that shape how the whole platform behaves under load.
What you'll do
- Push VM boot, resume, and fork times down to the floor of what the hardware allows.
- Build the control plane that schedules, migrates, and heals machines across the fleet.
- Work close to the metal: KVM, Firecracker-style VMMs, kernel boot, cgroups, and the network path.
- Set the reliability bar for a system teams trust to keep their machines alive.
About you
- You're a systems engineer who's at home in Rust, the kernel, and the network stack.
- You've built things that have to be fast and correct at the same time, and you sweat both.
- You have strong opinions about distributed systems, and you'll argue for them.
- You're in Bucharest or Amsterdam, or excited to relocate to one of them.
